It had been eleven years since I last visited Estes Park. The previous occasion was the descending and final stage of the 2012 six-day Ride the Rockies epic cycling classic. Although my cycling stamina has lessened over the years, the memories of those 442 miles remain strong:
Gunnison to Hotchkiss – 79 miles – North Rim of the Black Canyon – 8,311 ft. Hotchkiss to Carbondale – 68 miles – McClure Pass – 8,755 ft. Carbondale to Leadville – 83 miles – Independence Pass – 12,095 ft. Leadville to Granby – 94 miles – Fremont Pass – 11,318 ft. & Ute Pass – 9,165 ft. Granby to Estes Park – 63 miles – Trail Ridge Rd. – 12,183 ft. & Milner Pass – 10,758 ft. Estes Park to Ft. Collins – 55 miles – Horsetooth Reservoir – 5,420 ft.

A recent visit on a quiet January Sunday revealed Estes Park's vibrant spirit. With the Big Thompson River flowing (presently quietly on account of a period of scant snowfall) through town and snow-capped peaks in the distance, the natural beauty alone is reason enough to go.

Historic downtown Estes Park features cute gift shops and restaurants to pop into.
Be sure to look up and admire the 80-foot towering 1913 Park Theater, featuring 224 seats (extra cushions provided upon request) and unique auditorium lighting set-up.
Another must-see is the iconic 1909 Stanley Hotel. The hotel inspired Stephen King’s spine-chilling novel, The Shining.
“Any big hotels have got scandals," he said. "Just like every big hotel has got a ghost. Why? Hell, people come and go. Sometimes one of em will pop off in his room, heart attack or stroke or something like that. Hotels are superstitious places. No thirteenth floor or room thirteen, no mirrors on the back of the door you come in through, stuff like that. [...]” - Stephen King, The Shining
Stanley Hotel, just imagine
Don’t let tales or fear of ghosts frighten you away. Tour the hotel’s intricate interior, witness the ornate architecture, browse the gift shop, marvel at the vintage Stanley Steamer in the lobby. Whether you book a few nights lodging or just pose for photos on the front steps, you’re sure to feel the lively spirits of past visitors (and residents?) at this storied location.
While our winter trip was short, it was easy to see that Estes Park has adventure for all seasons. The town serves as a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and abundant outdoor activities like hiking and snowshoeing.
With stunning scenery and a charming small-town vibe, Estes Park is the perfect weekend getaway, whatever the season.
