Seattle & Region - Port Gamble

Port Gamble: More Than a Bend in the Road

Highway 104 bypasses Port Gamble, the picturesque and historic town on the northern tip of Kitsap Peninsula, approximately 31 miles and 1-2 hours (depending upon the ferry availability) northwest of Seattle.  Motorists, intent on reaching other destinations (including Port Townsend, Hoods Canal, Port Angeles, Washington coast, etc.), often hurry past.  But they should stop because Port Gamble (PG, for short) has a lot to offer.

I’ve visited PG many times, alone, with family, and with friends. So intrigued about the town and its history, I even wrote a book about it (More Than A Bend in the Road).  But what I want to note in this blog are a few of my favorite experiences.

Strolling: “Slow down you move too fast…”  Simon and Garfunkel sang those lyrics about New York City years ago and PG is a great place to also kick down a few cobblestones and feel, well if not groovy, at least relaxed along tree lined sidewalks, scenic vistas, cordial folks and calm atmosphere.

Kayaking: Bring your own or rent from the friendly and knowledgeable folks at the well-equipped Olympic Outdoor Center.  Either way, you’ll enjoy a water level view of marine life and, depending on the cloud cover, the nearby Olympic Mountains.

Hiking and Biking:  The Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park features the Stottlemeyer trail system, ranging from wide dirt roads to a multitude of single tracks.  Again, bring your own bike or rent from Olympic Outdoor Center.

Paranormal:  Port Gamble “after dark” is a great way to discover the paranormal history and culture of this nearly 200-year-old town.  Port Gamble Paranormal Tours offers a 3-hour guided visit for an inside behind-the-scenes view.

Museum: The Museum, open May - September | Thursdays - Sundays | 12PM-5PM, has a priceless collection of artifacts, exhibits and photos, plus a friendly and knowledgeable curator. I highly recommend a visit. Take your time and immerse yourself in the history of the people and events that have made this such a special place.

Drama: The Port Gamble Theater may be a small venue but it has large aspirations. You should include a performance,  whether in the audience or on stage (yes, auditions are available  for Christmas plays!).

Shopping: No franchise stores here, instead a variety of small shops.  Curios, fabrics, antiques…; you won’t be disappointed.  One of my favorites is Wish, with a fascinating collection of hand selected cards, books, puzzles and games, arts supplies and more.
